vSphere tags are incredibly powerful objects, that can be used in many and amazing ways. One of the possible use cases for tags is Data Protection. Veeam supports vSphere tags in both vSphere 5.5 and 6.0, and with them you can create advanced policy-based data protection rules.
I’ve always been a fan of PernixData since the day I first learned about them at Storage Field Day 3 more than a year ago. I’ve always been in touch with them afterwards, visited their offices in San Jose, and I was also accepted into their PernixPro program. “oh gosh, Luca has gone mad…” I’m almost sure this is your feeling when you read the title of this post. It’s no secret I work for Veeam, and our flagship product is Veeam Backup & Replication, a data protection solution for virtualized environments. So why did I chose that title? I like catchy titles, and most of all this is the question I asked my self after reading another blog post. Read my post, and you will understand why my final answer is “yes, damn yes!”.
Some weeks ago, Nimble Storage published on its blog an article titled It’s Time To Get Aggressive About Data Protection. the post is a nice summary and analysis of a research they conducted on their customers. The topic, as you can understand from the title, is Data Protection. They interviewed 1600 of their customers with different sizes, from small to medium to large enterprises; and the results were pretty interesting. If I’d have to summarize in a phrase: a need for Next-Gen Data Protection is arising.
