Backup performance of VMware VVOLs

Luca Dell'Oca, December 6, 2016November 27, 2016

Virtual Volumes, or VVOLs, has been one of the biggest addition in VMware vSphere 6. If your storage array supports them, you can start to play with it and decide if it’s time to migrate from monolithic VMFS volumes to this new exciting storage technology. VVOLs have several advantages over regular VMFS volumes, from the granularity of the volume management (essentially, we have now one “LUN” per virtual disk), to policy-based management, and so on. One of the aspects that people didn’t focused too much is the impact on backup operations coming from VVOLs.

Pros and cons of storage snapshots as a data protection solution

Luca Dell'Oca, October 6, 2014December 4, 2016

In one of my presentations for the VeeamON conference, titled The Quest for the Ultimate Backup Storage Architecture, I will explain how a tiered approach to data protection is the best solution to have an effective protection in place, and I will describe the different layers of data protection that can be applied to a production environment, and the layer I thought about for the most of the time was Storage Snapshots. Also, I’m trying to have a common topic among the blog posts I’m linking, and the first topic is Veeam Backup & Replication.

Luca Dell'Oca, April 17, 2014April 18, 2014

In the new upcoming v8, Veeam Backup & Replication will add a new storage vendor for its Backup from Storage Snapshots support, and this vendor is NetApp. All the FAS and V Series will be supported, both in 7-Mode or Clustered Mode, with the only requirement being the OnTAP OS being at least 8.1.
After playing with the tech preview for a month now, I’d like to talk a little bit more about a couple of new technologies that are going to be in there.
