Devo ammettere che l’interesse per questo nuovo tool di vmware è nato unicamente dal titolo. Incuriosito, mi sono guardato questo video:
Lo scopo ultimo di questo progetto è avere un tool per automatizzare anche le operazioni più complesse che vanno effettuare in una piattaforma vsphere. Come sentirete nel video, la considerazione iniziale è che powershell non copre tutti i comandi e le opzioni disponibili con le API di vSphere. Da qui l’esigenza di un tool che potesse colmare il buco.
Sarà vero? Beh, in parte… Diciamocela tutta, vedendo il video, Onyx molto semplicemente intercetta tutti i comandi che date all’interno di vclient, e ve li traduce in codice powershell, che potete quindi prendere e riutilizzare. Per carità, può risultare utilissimo, ma dall’intro roboante e da alcuni post di blogger presenti a vmworld pareva chissà cosa…
Credo che sia molto più interessante allora utilizzare strumenti come PowerWF. Dove al massimo andrete a caricare il codice “intercettato” con Onyx.

Are you stating that Onyx is more interesting by itself than PowerWF or that the two tools together are interesting? Internally at PowerWF we’re excited attaching to directly to Onyx and importing configuration change scripts as workflows. We’re wondering whether admins would be as interested in this integration as we are.

I was saying that at the end the only real usage I see at the moment for Onyx seems to be intercepting powershell strings, in order to use them in a complete suite like PowerWF.
I did not have time to go deep with your tools but it’s in my to-do list! The idea of having PowerWF connected to Onyx in an automated way sounds cool!!!!
